Overview &
History
Discover
the mysterious underground world of the Fikirini Sister Caves, a trio of
limestone caves rich in history, geology, and legend. Also known
interchangeably as the Fikirini Caves, Three Sister Caves, or Giant Caves,
these natural wonders lie inland from Kenya’s coast and are a hidden gem for
history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and curious explorers.
Formed from coral limestone when the area was submerged by the ocean, the caves still bear fossil evidence of their marine past, including corals, mussels, and oysters. Over time, underground rivers carved out these vast caverns, now offering an unforgettable journey through both natural history and cultural heritage.
Highlights of the
Three Caves:
Mdenyenye Cave
The largest of the three, this cave served as a hideout for villagers during the era of slave traders. It’s accessed through a collapsed doline via a wooden staircase. The name Mdenyenye comes from the Tswaka word for climbing or descending by rope or hanging roots.
Pangani Cave
A sacred spiritual site for the local Tswaka community. It’s steeped in legend, including the SmileFar Connection—a tale suggesting a possible underground link to Shimoni Caves 5 km away (not yet confirmed by explorers)
Kisimani Cave
Famous
for its ever-flowing freshwater well, crucial for both people and wildlife. The
cave is inhabited by monkeys, baboons, and a large bat population.
These
caves host one of Africa’s largest bat colonies, with over 40,000 bats
including:
Egyptian fruit bats Common bent-wing bats
Long-fingered bats Tomb bats
Angle-faced
bats
The
bats are harmless and navigate using ultrasonic radar, but masks are
recommended inside the caves to protect from histoplasmosis, a rare airborne
illness sometimes found in caves.
Cultural Insight
The surrounding Tswaka (Fikirini) village is historically important to the Digo people. A local community-based organization manages tourism here. Guided visits are strongly recommended—not just for safety, but also for a rich storytelling experience.
